Signs Your Forklift Needs Service

Sometimes it’s obvious that your forklift needs service, other times the signs are more subtle and missing these signs can lead to more extensive damage to your forklift, resulting in more costly repairs that take more time, reducing productivity and increasing your costs. Below are some signs to look for that could indicate your forklift is in need of service.

Internal Combustion (IC) Forklift

Engine & Performance Issues

  • Hard starting or frequent stalling (especially when warm)

  • Loss of power when lifting or driving

  • Rough idling or misfiring

  • Backfiring on LPG/propane units

  • Excessive exhaust smoke

    • Black = fuel system issue

    • Blue = oil burning

    • White = coolant or injector problems

Overheating & Smells

  • Temperature gauge running hot

  • Coolant leaks or low coolant levels

  • Strong fuel or oil smells

  • Burning odor during operation

Fluid Leaks & Consumption

Usage-Based Red Flags (Even If It “Feels Fine”)

  • Missed planned maintenance intervals

  • High operating hours since last service

  • Operating in dusty, hot, or heavy-load environments

Electric Forklift

Battery & Power Issues

  • Shorter run time than normal or frequent battery changes

  • Battery won’t take a full charge or charge times keep increasing

  • Corrosion on battery terminals or cables

  • Battery gets hot while charging

  • Strong sulfur or “rotten egg” smell (lead-acid batteries)

Electrical & Control Problems

  • Forklift won’t power on or shuts down unexpectedly

  • Error codes or warning lights on the display

  • Jerky acceleration or delayed response

  • Lift, tilt, or travel functions working intermittently

Hydraulics, Steering & Brakes
